Plastic pollution is a global crisis impacting the environment, health, and climate. Community leaders and frontline workers play a critical role in tackling this escalating problem. Urgent global actions are needed to address this crisis effectively. EJCAP coalition members attended the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) on November 22, witnessing the essential contributions of waste pickers in Nairobi and underscoring their importance in the treaty negotiations.
In March 2022, the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) adopted resolution 5/14, titled “End Plastic Pollution: Towards an International Legally Binding Instrument,” initiating negotiations for a global plastics treaty set to be finalized by the end of 2024. For the Global Plastics Treaty to successfully combat plastic pollution, its mechanisms and solutions must operate within climate and planetary boundaries. This treaty presents a pivotal opportunity to make a substantial impact and could become one of the most significant environmental agreements in history.
